Goal
Redesign the YT Music app

Introduction

Brief Overview: In this Design Review exercise, we aim to evaluate and propose improvements for the YouTube Music mobile application from a UX/UI perspective. The focus is on enhancing user experience through intuitive design and streamlined functionality.
Purpose Statement: As we delve into the analysis of YouTube Music, we may identify areas where design enhancements could potentially enrich the user experience. This exercise offers an opportunity to explore these possibilities, considering various     factors that might contribute to improved usability and engagement.
YT Music is a music streaming platform that offers a wide range of songs, albums, and playlists forusers to explore and enjoy. YT Music allows listeners to discover new music and create customized playlists tailored to their preferences.

Defining the problem

Upon reviewing the YT Music app, various visual shortcomings have emerged. The menu options lack visual allure, diminishing the overall aesthetic, while the absence of a direct search icon impedes user accessibility. Furthermore, visual hierarchy within geometric elements is notably absent, and color contrast is inadequate, contributing to a lack of clarity. Scrollable containers inundated with options exacerbate the issue.
These deficiencies echo a disregard for fundamental design principles, particularly those of Gestalt. Users frequently engage with menu options and the search feature, making these areas crucial for improvement. Feedback on visual hierarchy and color contrast has been overwhelmingly negative, primarily due to poor contrast in dark-themed elements like buttons and sections.

Enhanced Menu and Visual Clarity

A new menu bar now includes a prominent search icon, improving accessibility. Furthermore, a white contour enhances visual clarity in information display areas, addressing concerns about hierarchy and contrast. These updates aim to elevate the app's aesthetics and streamline user interaction, aligning with UX design principles. Further testing will validate their impact on user satisfaction.

Unified Geometric Elements

Addressing concerns about visual hierarchy, geometric elements have undergone a unified approach to ensure clarity and coherence across the interface. Scrollable containers, previously lacking visual transitions, now feature subtle cues for smoother navigation. Iconography, once aesthetically lacking, has been subtly refined while maintaining brand identity, resulting in a more pleasing appearance.

Improved Visual Contrast

In response to visual monotony, a gradient background has been introduced, breaking the original flatblack with enhanced screen contrast without compromising readability. These refinements adhere to UX/UI principles, enhancing the app's visual appeal and usability while preserving brand integrity.

Learnings and Reflections: Improving YT Music's Design

Throughout the analysis and enhancement process of YT Music's design, several key learnings and reflections have emerged.

Reflecting on the design flaws of YT Music, it became evident that issues such as visual hierarchy inconsistencies and lack of aesthetic appeal in certain elements significantly impacted user experience.

To address these flaws, I employed strategies such as unifying geometric elements to ensure visual coherence and refining iconography to enhance aesthetic appeal while maintaining brand identity.

Challenges included finding the balance between aesthetic enhancements and maintaining brand consistency, as well as ensuring that visual improvements did not compromise usability.

The main takeaway from this experience was the importance of balancing aesthetics with usability and adhering to UX/UI principles to create a cohesive and visually pleasing user experience.

I plan to apply these learnings by incorporating a more holistic approach to design, considering not only aesthetics but also usability and brand consistency in all future projects.
